Colonial Tentweb Orbweaver

Family Araneidae

Cyrtophora citricola

The Colonial Tentweb Orbweaver was first discovered in Florida just north of Homestead in 2000.  It has since spread northward and westward through south Florida.  The ones featured in the photo gallery were found in Hillsborough County.

I’m not sure if you could actually call them a social colony species, but one thing is certain, they do maintain their individual webs, which are connected to other webs forming a matrix of webs.  This type web construction may prove to have beneficial rewards for the Colonial Tentweb Orbweaver, such as more efficient prey capture and better protection from predators.
