Southern Crevice Spider

Family Filistatidae

This spider is also known as the Southern House Spider and is found throughout the state.  It is the only crevice spider from the family Filistatidae found in Florida.  You can easily find the female in old barns and sheds backed in a nasty sheet-like web peering out from a hole in the center, waiting on insects to get entangled.  She is a poor house keeper allowing debris to pile up all over her web.  It's understandable that she lives alone.

The male looks entirely different from the female and is often mistaken for a Brown Recluse Spider.  The male can be found wandering around the same habitat as the female.  Guess what he's looking for...the female of course.
